What Is A Sump Pump?

You may have heard your neighbors mention their sump pump and how thankful they are for it after big rain storms. You may not have given much thought to what they were talking about at the time, but when water intrusion strikes and moisture problems are discovered below your home, your curiosity may spike. If you are like many American homeowners, sump pumps aren’t usually a hot topic of discussion. We get it. However, sump pumps are pretty important for the overall health of your basement or crawl space and home in general. So, let’s talk about what they do, actually, and why you should consider installing one this year.

What is a Sump Pump?

Going by its name, a sump pump is in fact a pump. It’s installed underneath the floor of basements and crawl spaces to collect excess groundwater before it can enter or flood your home. During times of heavy rainfall, and especially if you live in a flood zone, groundwater can easily rise and enter through the cracks in the foundation of your home. If there is a possibility that flooding can occur in your basement or crawl space, the sump pump will collect all of the excess water and redirect it away from your home.

It is also a great idea to check your gutters, downspouts, and your land grade. If your gutter system is not working properly, water isn’t being carried away from your house efficiently. More than likely, it’s being dumped along the perimeter of your home, ending up in your basement or crawl space. Also, your land grade can be used to help redirect water away from your home. Do You Need One in Your Home?

Does your basement or crawl space experience below-ground wetness and moisture that seems to be on-going? According to the American Society of Home Inspectors, more than 60 percent of homes experience on-going, extensive moisture, and should consider having an expert home waterproofing company install a sump pump.
